Know your rights Feb 24, 2008 8:26:48 AM Go back Yesterday I found United Noodles which is supposedly the Midwest's biggest Asian supermarket. I showed up and I almost wanted to cry, these people have obviously never seen the 99 Ranch Market in San Gabriel. Though meager in comparison, they did carry all the important items like taro buns (FROM ROSEMEAD NO LESS), and pocky, and spicy ramen. The straw that broke my back was definitely seeing the prices! $5.99 for a pint of Ito En Japanese Green Tea? HELL TO THE NO. I'm going to ask my mom to DHL me some Asian food instead. As much as I've been complaining about Minneapolis, I really do like it here. There are a ton of good restaurants to try out, we have the most amazing contemporary art museum, my backyard is the size of my old apartment, and there are lakes and parks everywhere (even if you can only take advantage of this 4 months out of the year). Complaints and comparisons aside, we still have not received our security deposit from the last landlord. This is the same landlord that called me to the witness stand to testify against our CRAZY NEIGHBOR, the one that used to yell and threaten us at all hours of the night. It has been twenty two freaking days and I haven't received an email or our moneys. Time for another small claims court case! People need to know their renting rights! I've lived in so many apartments without knowing my rights or were too lazy to look them up and see if management was adhering to them. Can you imagine all the money wasted because we were too lazy? Anyway, what you need to know is in the California Civil Code 1950.5 which you can find here in a lovely PDF. Basically management can't take money from your security deposit for regular wear and tear, they have to give it to you within 21 days or at least a note as to why they're late and there's no such thing as nonrefundable security deposits. So landlords CAN SUCK IT because the people know their rights and we shouldn't be afraid to use them. Reader comments ![]() |
